What Are Hoverboards?

What are hoverboards? Put simply, a hoverboard is a levitating board that closely resembles a skateboard without wheels. The idea of hoverboards was originally introduced as a means of personal transportation in the films Back to the Future 2 and Back to the Future 3. In the 1990’s, the clarity of whether or not hoverboards existed was a blur topic especially since they were deemed too dangerous. Fortunately, some companies maximized the success of both movies and decided to turn hoverboard vehicles into safe, usable devices that could be used for personal transportation. According to the Guinness World Records, the definition of the hoverboards is inclusive of autonomously powered personal levitators.

The adoption of the concept of hoverboards has been taken over by various companies but none has managed to really design something exactly as those used in the Back to the Future films. For instance, an airboard manufactured by Arbotech Industries was unveiled at the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening Ceremony. A second edition of this airboard was released in 2007. Films like The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Doom Runners (1997), Kyle XY (Season 3) and Masters of the Universe among others have also been known to adopt the idea of hoverboards in varying ways.

Hoverboards are made of a few basic components some of which include motors whose function is to maintain balance of the board and propel it forward, a gyroscope which determines the pitch of the machine, batteries to fuel it and finally microprocessors which manage power output to the motors. Perhaps the most important function of a hoverboard is to remain upright and the microprocessors do a good job of ensuring that the above objective is realized. Different hoverboards come with components with different specifications.

The increased popularity of hoverboards can be attributed to celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Skrillex, Nick Jonas, Wiz Khalifa and Justin Bieber. Despite the increasing popularity of hoverboards over the past few years, there has always a safety concern when it comes to the use of hoverboards. This has developed into a global issue over the last few months when as one of the most popular gifts during the festive season, its use resulted in a ton of wipeouts. Dozens of videos that were uploaded during live action depict who had injuries while using hoverboards. In extreme cases, hoverboards have been known to explode in fire. Caution is therefore advised when using hoverboards to avoid accidents and injuries.
